Doom 3 the expansion pack, because you did such a bad job in the original, they needed to make a sequel. Yes the idiots of UAC have done it again, unleashing the demons of hell upon us again and it is up to you, a completely different but very much the same marine who for some reason has the same name as the old marine (in my case Luvsdagoch) to save the day.
In the original you find out that an asshole, Malcolm Betruger, has the urge to be an asshole and cause hell to break lose... I don't know why, but possibly because he's an asshole. Anyways, you run around with a new artefact "The Hellstone" trying to return it and prevent hell from taking over... and kill that asshole.
Good -
New Weapons: A new weapon that is introduced which has a positive and negative affect on the game is the Grabber. The positive is that you don't have to waste bullets on lesser creatures or enemies with projectiles. However the good times end there... The double barrelled shotgun is also introduced which brings back a sense of nostalgia. The Hellstone was an interesting idea, but kind of boarders on the edge of every other game out there. It's a nice add in though, You power it up by gathering human souls, which there are a lot of, cause everyone's dead, and it starts with just bullet time power but adds berserk and invulnerability following boss fights, two Doom classics... speaking of boss fights.
More boss fights: 3 of the 4 boss fights are quite nice, they both use the new artefact and new guns, which lead to upgrades, yada, yada. Anyways, it's all nice and good, you have to do more than just shoot them to death any old time, it's nice.
The first one you have to use the physics gun to fire plasma at him, which is provided from two guns on the side shooting for... some reason. Makes nice use of your new grabber.
Second one you have to use your artefact to slow him down when he goes berserk and shoot him in his heart... which he for some reason exposes.
Third, use your new upgraded artefact to damage him, then destroy 3 energy tanks he's using...
Anyways, none are rocket science, but it's nice to see more than a normal guy who can just take a lot of bullets for... some reason *cough* F.E.A.R *cough*
Bad -
New Weapons: Call me picky but between the three new weapons all other's can be rendered as dead weight. You never need to use a weapon against anything other than zombies and wraiths, and maggots. All of the small creatures can simply be picked up and thrown away... apparently that being their biggest weakness. Anything you simply keep your distance and take your choice of killing method. Against a good %70 of them you can just use the grabber to hurl their own attack back at them. If you're feeling lazy just slow down time get close and blow holes in them. This only gets easier as time goes on and you're artefact upgrades, making everything a one hit kill and you're invincible... Yawn.
Atmosphere - Or rather lack of. I don't know if I've grown immune because of the original, or because they load you with more guns and ammo than an army would need. Compound that with the grabber and you're never low on ammo, which makes the "fear" of being alone part of the game seem a little less. Furthermore it’s a little less interesting when you’re running into the same monsters over and over again. It seemed to me I was facing an endless hoard of the same brainless creatures which can all be defeated by using the Grabber to throw their fireballs back at them.
Difficulty - Once again, you're loaded, simply loaded. You have almost unlimited guns and ammo, and the only 3 you need are the new ones. I just used the super shotgun as soon as I picked it up and never let go, yet I never fell below 150 ammo. Yes, I was quick saving and quick loading every 15 seconds, but that's because the game has a knack for keeping explosive objects around you, then making other things shoot at them... not hard, just a pain in the ass.
Length: I don’t conceder myself too hardcore of a gamer anymore, which is why it throws me off a little when I can beat a game in one sitting. I understand that the game is just an expansion pack but this one feels almost criminally short.
Final Boss Fight: I’m almost speechless about this one, after a few good boss fights that took a moment for me to figure out the patters and the very easy to find weak spots this happens… if there is one thing I don’t like it’s winning a boss fight and having no clue how I beat it (looking at you Resident Evil 3)… All I recall doing was using the artefact, bfg, and running around like an ass then as soon as it started it was over… I won… SPN’s Strategy Guide Tips: Don’t die…
Following the boss fight you get a little cinematic where your character finishes the boss off for you because apparently we suck. No real conclusion is show in terms of the fate of the world or anything… but that’s where Doom 4 comes in… I guess.
Overall: 7/10
I know it sounds like I hated it right, well not so much… it was bad, but I only paid $2 for it so...
