I'm obviously going to overlook the basic ones like Batman and whatever the hell else came out on systems I don't own. This is just a list of games you can find on Steam, that you may have overlooked or not even thought about trying.
Top 5 Games on Steam from 2011 that you should play
Hon Mention (not on steam, but you should still play it)Kirby Return to Dreamland. - After the joke that was Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Nintendo followed up with Kirby Return to Dreamland , a Kirby game made the way a Kirby game should be. Co-op is great, maps are fun, story is meh, but who goes a shit when you’re having this much nostalgic fun. Includes new power-ups as well as some classics, however, no Yo-Yo… shame.
5) RAGE - The most recent release from FPS powerhouse ID, a company in which if you were alive in the 90’s then you’ve probably played countless hours of at least one of their games, and it’s everything you’d expect from them. RAGE is without a doubt the most visually stimulating game I’ve ever played, it should be noted I don’t play many new games. RAGE is your basic FPS game with vehicle quests, gambling games in town, and lots of people to shoot in the face. Upon reflection RAGE doesn’t really do anything new and exciting, or even special, but hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… Right? Besides, the look on the bandit's faces when they're dead is so priceless it just asks for a screen shot... Yeah, not going to... I'm just saying.
4) Limbo - Limbo is as simple as a game gets, no colour, and only 1 action other than moving, which is pulling objects. Limbo is one big physics puzzle/ timing puzzle that is simple and to the point, don’t die. I use the word “big” very generously here because the game is only about 3 hours max, if that. However, Limbo does what it should and it does it well, Limbo is good for 3 hours of fun, or taking your demented rage out on a small child, if nothing else.
3) Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 - Like Magic the Gathering? Don’t have time to play with friends? Play against AI or Online with Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. While you don’t get to build your own deck from scratch it is great for opening up your mind to new builds you’d normally never think about using. I’ll over look it because I know it’s a balancing thing, if you allow everyone to build any deck they want odds are everyone would have the best cards possible, and then it wouldn’t be fun. Seeing as I sunk over 40 hours into it in under a month while in school, working, and dating, you‘d think it would be higher on this list, however , on my level of addictiveness scale I’d only place it at an Asian nudes level of addictiveness. It’s all fine as long as it’s free, but as soon as they start asking for money for the full experience, I start to look elsewhere, because I have a general “ I only pay for a game once” rule. Releasing expansions are fine, charging money for one deck with no new challenges or duels… No.
2) Anomaly: Warzone Earth - Straight out of the “games you’ve never heard of bin” this Indie game is worth a look. Do you remember playing tower defence games in Starcraft and Warcraft? Did you ever wonder what it was like to be the wave of enemies rather than the towers? Do you like guys that sound like Jason Statham? If so Anomaly is for you. In this game you play as Commander Statham trying to guide your way through the streets of Baghdad and Tokyo investigating a strange alien ship that has crash landed in both of the cities. You have to bring up your map and plan the best route of attack, and use Jason Statham to provide power-ups for your units to prevent them from being blown to shit. You get to choose which units you have, where in line they are, and upgrade them when you gain enough cash to do so. You can only have 6 units at a time so you have to choose the right combo for each level, which honestly pretty much always turns out to be the same thing. However, still fun as hell and it was one of the bright spots if my year in terms of gaming. I give it a watching Dexter level of addictiveness, I could wait to play the next level, but I’d rather know what happens next right the fuck now, and it took me about 11 hours to beat, which is roughly the same amount of time a season of Dexter would take.
1) Sonic Generations - When a game is number 1 on my list, and I’m not even half way through it yet, you know they’ve done something right. Sonic Generations is without a doubt the first playable sonic game since the 1990's. It's not just fun, it's platforming bliss and everything a Sonic game should be, fast and fun. You get to play Sonic levels from the first, second, and S&N games. Admittedly it goes a little down hill after that as I’ve never ventured beyond Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast, so after the 4th level everything is unfamiliar to me, including the characters you have to save. All in all the music is great, the extra challenges are frustrating at times, but fun as hell, and for the first time in years I don’t hate Sonic in 3D. The camera work is great, and the speed works fine with the game and I have yet to encounter one of recent Sonic game’s famous graphic glitches. My one beef with the game is that it doesn’t convert to the computer very well, all the commands on the screen are x-box controller commands so you have to press random buttons until you find out which is which. It took me 10 minutes to figure out the freaking title screen. However if you have a PS3 or X-box controller just use that. I’d rate Sonic Generations my highest addiction level, eating miniature Reese peanut butter cups instead of dinner addiction level. I gave up eating dinner just to play this game ignored the stomach pain involved because I was just having too much fun.
